5th grade March News

The Bridge competition is here again!

The TISA 5th grade is frantically getting ready for their annual Bridge Competition on Wednesday, March 4th. We have 7 teams competing ranging from 2 to 4 members. We have come up with some unique designs and look forward to participating in this amazing event! Please attend if you can. It is presented in a science fair format with an emphasis on science engineering.

We also recently visited the Harwood Museum and participated in their Arts in the Schools Program. We looked at the work of Dean Pulver who does amazing sculptures  made of basswood and copper. The students then made their own folded books with paper, pencils and markers. Here are some photos of our visit.

5th graders Present the major land biomes of the world

The 5th grade has been working on their study of biomes. Working in teams, the students chose one of the 6 major land biomes of the world: Tundra, Coniferous Forest (Taiga), Deciduous Forest, Grassland, Tropical Rain Forest and Desert. Each team organized the information they researched into a brochure. They also created a model that represented their biome. Each team researched the following information:
Geographical Location of the biome
Climate and Weather
Flora (Plants) & adaptations
Fauna (Animals) & adaptations
Natural Resources
Landforms specific to their biome
Places of interest that would attract tourists

Each team created a tri-fold brochure about their biome.
They also designed a 3D model or poster representing their biome. They presented their information to the class so that everyone would have information about all the major biomes of the earth. Please check out our photos of our presentations.

5th Graders Study Biomes in Class and out in the Wilderness!

Last week, 5th graders went camping at the Sangre de Cristo Youth Ranch on Lama Mountain. They camped under the stars, roasted marshmallows, shared stories and sang songs next to a campfire and hiked through meadows to the high country. In class, we have been studying biomes of the earth. Groups will present the results of their research this week. They were assigned to make a brochure which will teach their fellow students about their biome, including animals, plants, environmental features and weather. We also started working with gardener Nikki Cain. The 5th graders planted 4 apricot trees on Thursday.  Check out our photos of our activities.
